Do You Think It's Appropriate To Allow A Five Year Old To Have A Social Media Presence?
Hola! The other day I heard a Mother ask on the radio if it was ok to let her five year old snapchat? She was very desperate in which she felt pressure to do so. The radio host was taken a back since he didn't have children and was surprised the mother was unsure. He felt like he wouldn't let a five year old make any social media presence.
I am a mother, and I totally agree with that host. Five years old is too young, and the fact that they want to be on social media makes me wonder about one thing.
What type of social activities is this five year old engaged in? Most five year olds I know are familiar with the internet life, but has no desire of making an imprint in that world.
I find it very scary that a five year old has this desire. On the other hand I see the pressures families are having with social media, and their children keeping up. The only thing I would suggest is maybe having select families and friends with locks on anyone trying to enter (if that's even possible?) to allow them to get the experience within a safe chatting environment. Every adult involved must keep a watchful eye on the chat going on between their children and actively engage when necessary. I definetly would not allow a five year old, but maybe at nine with this type of set up.
Enough about what I think.......what do you think? Do you think its appropriate to allow a five year old to make a social media presence such as snap chat?
